When the audiologist made her rounds in the hospital, she commented on Baby J's ear shape. "He's a candidate for ear splinting," she explained, "You should at least go visit with the plastic surgeon." And so it began.
If she had never made that comment, I would have never thought twice about baby J's floppy right ear fold. He certainly didn't have Dr. Spock ears and his hearing had nothing to do with the shape. But the mommy guilt kicked in! What if he gets teased in middle school because of his ear shape and I had the power to help it at a tiny age? Seriously, this thought spiraled out of control and I found myself trucking back and forth to the clinic about six times over two and a half weeks! Babies ears are extremely pliable for the first six weeks. As the estrogen makes its way out of his system, his ear will harden. Small splints now will allow his ear shape to harden in the correct way, potentially avoiding the need for plastic surgery in the future (and this is NOT going to happen!).
The plastic surgeon's nurse fit these small bendy plastic splints in his ear and taped them securely. They did not cause any pain for Baby J- just a hassle for me! I couldn't get these wet and I needed to be careful when dressing. I should have taken a "before" photo- because they definitely changed! Sheesh ... success with a plastic surgeon at such a young age!

ONE, TWO, THREE
I still cannot believe how this happened:
both of my baby brothers became new dads just 9 weeks apart.
And Baby J came 10 weeks later.
This is the first of MANY photos yet to come! These little cousins will grow up together!

HIPPIDY- HOPPIDY
(And JP asks: "Why does the Easter Bunny have the same skin color as Grandpa T?" as he notices the small area of flesh emerging from the back of the rabbit suit!)

BEST FRIENDS
Like it or not, these two little guys are going to be best friends. Our dear friends, Mr. A and Ms. E live just two blocks away. Baby Landen was born just 10 days before Baby J! Tonight these two babes finally met! (And it's next to impossible to take a decent picture of two newborns!).

ADVANCED MATERNAL AGE
When I started working in the fertility industry a few years ago, I realized very quickly that I was old. Well, I wasn't officially old at that time... but the magic age of 35 was approaching. After all, this is when one is termed "advanced maternal age". Of course, I truly do not believe that the worrisome statistics and risks associated with delivering a baby after age 35 are really that more than age 34.5. I guess the medical world needed to draw the line somewhere.
So when I found out I was pregnant last summer I frantically ran to my pregnancy wheel. I calculated that I was due just one week shy of my 35th birthday. Whew.
And what a blessing it was to deliver a healthy baby boy while I was still young. Because today, yes it is true, I am of advanced maternal age.
