BLACK FRIDAY

Rather than exchanging Christmas gifts with our neighbors, we planned a fun day of activities.  The girls went to the local ballet showing of "The Polar Express"
and then we all journeyed downtown to watch Santa Claus be rescued from the top of Old City Hall by the Firetrucks (while hundreds froze outside, we watched from the skyway!)
Baby J and Landen were in awe of the FireTruck - I doubt they even noticed Santa!
Plan A was to spend the rest of the night at Chuck E. Cheese's for pizza and games.
But since none of us had ever been to this place on a Friday night (one could just see the thick germs in the air!), we quickly made up Plan B: We let the kids go crazy on rides for about 20 minutes, doused them in hand sanitizer, stopped for carry out at at Papa John's and had a playdate back home.

Fun way to start out the Christmas season!

THANKSGIVING

Our Thanksgiving tradition continued … drove up to Aunt N's house for the day.  Of course, we indulged in a fabulous feast … but something magical happened. All of my cousin's kids played with my kids.  All.  Day.  Long.  Even Baby J was captivated.  The two story playhouse Uncle B built many years ago when my cousins and I used to play now housed all of these tiny happy faces.

This Thanksgiving, I remain thankful for all of my blessings … especially family!

CHICAGO

Road trip to Chicago!

Although the kids would have preferred to fly, A and I decided to load up the car and drive to Chicago for my four day medical conference.  Even with one stop, our journey was just over five hours.  We borrowed Grandma's DVD players and watched movies most of the way.

We've been promising AA an American Girl doll for her thumb sucking feat this summer … I finally was able to take her to pick one out!  We walked hand in hand down Michigan Avenue to the Big Store.  It's very rare that we get girl time like this.  After carefully looking at all of the dolls,
AA narrowed it down to three.   She sat and compared her top three choices for about fifteen minutes.  Finally, she chose the "Just Like Me" doll ...

same color hair and eyes.  She named her "Penelope Julia"  (I have no idea how or why - but the name has stuck!).
Probably the last time we'll be making a big purchase like this, so I real tried to soak it all in.  She was so gracious and excited!

A did a great job trying to keep the kids entertained while I was at "school" … he took them to The Lincoln Zoo and the Children's museum.  They swam in the hotel pool each afternoon.  We tried to go out for iconic Chicago pizza a few nights … but Baby J just wasn't into waiting patiently!
We all ventured to Shed Aquariam yesterday morning

and then just happened to be in the right spot at the right time for the big Holiday Parade Saturday evening.  Good thing I packed our hats at the last minute!

Life (with kids) is always easier when we all sleep in our own beds, eat our normal foods, and stick to our normal routine.  These four days were none of that.  (Sometimes not even close!).  But we made great memories … and as we were leaving today, JP asked "Can we please all go with you again on your next work trip?!?!".

SLEEPOVER

I'm not sure why it took us so long to come up with this idea.

Last week, JP and AA had their first sleepover at Brayden's house.  It was a win for all.

Tonight, we hosted Brayden and Gwen (and little LuLu came over to play).  After costumes and chaos, the kids put on their jammies, ate popcorn and watched Aladdin, and then headed up to bed.  It was so cute to overhear the girls giggling in AA's room and the boys talking in JP's room.

There were no tears.  And, everyone slept all night.

and we were all up playing by 6 AM!
The kids chose sugar cereal over pancakes for breakfast!
I definitely see this becoming a regular routine!

THANKFUL

JP's homework this weekend was to decorate a white feather with things he his thankful for; tomorrow, Mrs. Wenum will collect all of the feathers and decorate the large turkey hanging outside of their classroom.

Other than the glitter and the addition of "health", JP came up with all of the words and the design on his own!  I'm not exactly sure what the rules of listing "God" and "Jesus" on his feather for the public school … but I love how he came up with these (with "cars" wedged in between).  So genuine.  So pure.  So thankful.

BOX

It's the simple things!
For the past 10+ days, this large and tattered cardboard box has become a permanent fixture in our living room.  This old car seat box has been a little house, a restaurant, a boat, a spaceship, an art studio … and a hide out for Baby J!

I'm pretty sure I know what to get the kids for Christmas!
